JULY 1982
Review: DIVA
Diva, a sweet French import, started June 11 at the Cedar-Lee Theatre for a scheduled one to two week run. This film, marking the directorial debut of Jean-Jacques Beineux, shows remarkable attention to detail in filming, character and plot development, style and imagery. The story line is carefully and leisurely developed allowing time for characters to define themselves as a multitude of plots are carefully interwoven to their ultimate climaxes. The film is a combination comedy, romance, mystery in the best style of Alfred Hitchcock.
The central character is Jules, a young postman caught in the acute phase of hero worship for concert soprano, Cynthia Hawkins. Rooming in a deserted loft apartment furnished with the leftovers of junked cars and frescoes devoted to the age of the automobile, Jules indulges in his other passion, high quality recordings of opera.
The plot revolves around a pirated recording of Jules' idol, Cynthia Hawkins, the taped accusations of a prostitute concerning smugglers and white slavers. Both tapes fell into the possession of Jules, and before he is aware of it, he is the target of both the French underworld and Taiwanese record pirates. Living on the outskirts of normal society, Juies finds himself prey to its more unsavory elements. His first connections to the world around him is through the improper channels. Through the careful crafting of individual scenes, Beineux continually juxtaposes the disorder of the

Beineux presents aspects of surrealism, existentialism, and the absurdists in varied and subtle use of the camera all the while continuing the advance plot of this murder mystery movie. The result is an elegant film that appeals to the most sophisticated of audiences while unfolding a gripping suspence story that will hold the attention of the most jaded moviegoer. Unable to accept the mundane reality of their existence, Beineux portrays characters creating dreams large enough for them to inhabit.
The movie continues to enthrall its audience with its humor, romance, suspense, and excitement from its first frame to its conclusion. It allows the viewer to become absorbed completely and suspend the passage of time for an evening while they contemplate the nature of today's world.
An Open Letter From Isis
No words can express the emotion and concern that one feels when confronted with an unexpected and senseless act of violence. Although it cannot change the tragic facts, the owners and staff of Isis extend our deepest sympathies and pledge to all women of Isis that we will make every effort to prevent the occurrence of any further incidents of this nature.
Effective Monday, June 7, security will be provided on a seven day per week basis. The policewoman on duty will no longer be collecting cover charges and will be available to escort patrons to their cars if desired. Door control will be facilitated through the institution of membership cards. Non-members and gay men will be admitted only if escorted by members on a one guest per member basis. Membership cards will be available at no charge to patrons through Isis staff.
The Isis ownership also seeks input from the women in the community concerning their plans to remodel and upgrade the security at the W. 6th Street facility vs. the possibility of moving Isis to the Trilogy Complex on Prospect Avenue.
On behalf of the women of Isis, the ownership is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the assailant. Anyone who has seen or heard anything that might be of help, please contact me at Isis or call the Cleveland Police Department-Homicide-623-5464.
Let us all join together in an attempt to bring the guilty person to justice and restore a sense of well-being and unity to the women's community.
Sincerely, Barb Tamas Mgr., Isis
